An Introduction To Focusing with Class Descriptions
by Katarina Halm

The Beauty of Focusing
perhaps you would like to just pause…
                                               for a moment

With Focusing we create a space for new possibilities in all aspects of our living.  You can develop a bodily feel for the ‘more’ that is happening in any situation. From this bodily feel you will experience many small steps and find yourself making the changes in your life that bring you closer to your heart’s desire.

Focusing was developed by Gene Gendlin and his colleagues at the University of Chicago. Those of us who teach Focusing through the Vancouver Joy in Movement Studio are honored to be part of a community of more than 1000 certified Focusing teachers from 40 countries.

“Space, for us, is always a result,
an “in” that is generated by a sequence.
Any sequence goes on in its own generated space.

– Eugene Gendlin, A Process Model, 1997, page 242

Acknowledgements:

There are many different schools of Focusing. The foundation of our programme is four-fold:

  • Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF), a step wise syllabus created by Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin.
  • Meditative Listening, a style of Focusing created by Rob Foxcroft.
  • Whole-Body Focusing and Gestural Leads, as developed by Glenn Fleisch
  • Active Pause (AP), an extension of Focusing pioneered by Serge Prengel.

Teaching Method:
As we progress over several weeks, months or years, Katarina and Isabella remain open to what you like to do and what you do well. We support you to build on your strengths as you increase your confidence with Focusing partnership, your solo Focusing and your practice teaching. Through conversations, sessions and written feedback, a natural process unfolds gradually at your pace, for your optimum learning. You easily refine the weaker parts of your Focusing practice and discover your own best ways to learn and teach. There is also an on-line forum in which you may choose to participate.

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE CLASSES

Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF) Level 1, Encountering the Inner Relationship

Level 1 is offered in several formats:
12 class hours (weekends)  / 12 CEC
10 class hours (weekdays)  / 10 CEC
7.5 class hours (weekdays)  / 7.5 CEC
5 class hours (weekdays)  / 5 CEC
Individual Tutorial / 3-5 CEC

In this introduction to Inner Relationship Focusing you will learn basic Focusing and Partnership skills so that you can begin to practice Focusing partnership right away. Focusing partnership is the foundation for strengthening and including Focusing in your work and daily life. You will learn to guide yourself through the four stages of a Focusing session, using facilitative language. You will strengthen your understanding of felt sensing, and the attitude of Self in Presence which supports you in your relationship with your inner experience, allowing your process to deepen and widen, safely and comfortably. In this class you will also have an introduction to being a Companion, at first listening quietly to the Focuser, then having an opportunity to support the Focuser with more active listening skills, including some gentle reflection. Skills are introduced gradually, allowing mastery of one thing at a time, so that the learning is enjoyable and natural. Participants are given opportunities to practice in class, and encouraged to practice with one another and students from other classes outside of class time.

Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF) Level 2, Accompanyinthe Inner Relationship

Level 2 is offered in several formats:
12 class hours (weekends)  / 12 CEC
10 class hours (weekdays)  / 10 CEC
Individual Tutorial / 5 CEC

In Level Two there will be an opportunity to:

* Deepen your experience with Focusing and being a Focusing partner.
* Cultivate a sense of self awareness and the ability to hold strong emotions or ideas with compassion.
* Enjoy a space of “Self-in-Presence”.
* Develop “advanced listening skills” for helping your partner form and appreciate a felt sense.
* Learn how to “Be” and “Dwell” on the “Edge”  and perhaps discover a transformation, where the unclear  becomes clear.
* Practice a supportive process which brings you gentle sturdy steps with your Focusing and Listening.

Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF) Level 3, Supporting the Inner Relationship:

Level 3 is offered in several formats:
12 class hours (weekends)  / 12 CEC
10 class hours (weekdays)  / 10 CEC
7.5 class hours (weekdays)  / 7.5 CEC
Individual Tutorial / 10 CEC

In Level 3 you will be increase your listening skills and your understanding of the ways Focusing works to allow “Implicit Knowing” to open in its own way.  You will learn when and how to offer “reminders” as a Focusing Guide, along with nuances and alternatives for every stage of the process. You will be supported in this growing capacity through readings in “The Focusing Student’s and Companion’s Manual” by Ann Weiser Cornell, PhD & Barbara McGavin, “Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy” by Eugene Gendlin, plus additional writings by Gendlin and Cornell. You will enjoy in-class discussions, Focusing demonstrations and opportunities to practice with others in your group.

Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF) Level 3 Practicum:

This practicum is offered in several formats:
7.5 class hours / 7.5 CEC
Individual Tutorial / 7.5 CEC
3.5 class hours plus 4 hours of tutorial / 7.5 CEC

Concurrently with or after completing Focusing Level 3, you will deepen your understanding and skill with a Level 3 Practicum.  In addition to the 7.5 class hours you will participate in at least 5 hours of Focusing partnership practice & tutorials between classes. This  pivotal course, given on the phone or in person, is individually tailored to each student’s learning pace and style.

Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF) Level 4, Facilitating the Inner Relationship

Level 4 is offered in several formats:
12 class hours (weekends)  / 12 CEC
10 class hours (weekdays)  / 10 CEC
9 class hours (weekdays)  / 9 CEC
Individual Tutorial / 10 CEC
In addition to the 10-12 class hours for Level 4 Focusing, you will participate in 4-6 hours of Focusing partnership practice & tutorials between classes.

Level 4 centers on two important aspects of Focusing:
*  The Path of the Companion
*  Presence and Partiality

With “The Path of the Companion” you will supplement your listening skills with subtle refinements of the Focusing partner’s repertoire.

In our study of “Presence and Partiality” you will deepen your understanding of critical reactions and how to guide a Focuser when two or more parts are in conflict.  You will see how Focusing can ease the effects of merging and exiling aspects of a process when these  arise in a Focusing session.

You will enjoy in-class discussions, Focusing demonstrations and opportunities to practice with others in your group.

You will continue to learn the ways Focusing works to allow “Implicit Knowing” to open in its own way.  You will learn when and how to offer “reminders” as a Focusing Guide, along with nuances and alternatives for every stage of the process.

You will be supported in your growing Focusing skills through extensive writings by Ann Weiser Cornell as well as new selections in ”The Focusing Student’s and Companion’s Manual” by Ann Weiser Cornell, PhD & Barbara McGavin, and “Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy” by Eugene Gendlin.

We build on Janet Pfunder’s crossing of the works of Ullman and Gendlin.

There is an online forum to further develop our dialogue. (The online forum and reading of texts by Gendlin, Ullman and other dreams scholars is optional.) The course will support and compliment your learning in all areas of life. The structure and content will be useful to counselors, therapists and teachers in their professional practice.

We will enjoy a scholarly and experiential overview of many approaches to Focusing.

Module 7 is inspired by Rob Foxcroft:
“Gene says: ‘I remember spending quite a lot of time…thinking through how anything I would ever work on would be of a nature that could not be misused.’” … “For fifty years Gene has protected focusing from misuse.” … “It would be misuse in Gene’s terms (I think) if any group came to control how you and I could teach focusing or what we could do with focusing.”… “Gene guards our freedom and the diversity of focusing practice. He shows steadiness, vision, patience and skill. He saves us from becoming the usual kind of organization. It can’t be easy.”…”Thank you, Gene.”
